SmartTrack Performance Footbraces
The Performance version of the SmartTrack foot brace substitutes an aluminum body for the standard plastic track, making them stiffer, but still a bit more wobbly than a Sea-Lect footbrace.
For those who may want to retrofit the Toe Pilot rudder control system in the future, this model features a cable adjuster at the 'paddler end' of the footbrace that can be adjusted on the water, which is a HUGE benefit. Downsides are that this footbrace cannot be mounted to the gunwale and must use a drop kit, and a pair is 8oz heavier than the standard model. All other features are common to the standard model as explained below.
This well-built footbrace features a wide toe pad and easy adjustment mechanism that will not slip. Unfortunately, because the toe pad is perpendicular to the track it sits a bit high when gunwale-mounted in our modern kayaks, so we usually pair these with a drop kit. Also, because the toe pad sticks out much farther than the Sea-Lect design, sliding gear and float bags in and out of the bow can be challenging. For these reasons we typically do not use this style of footbrace in our modern kayaks, but if camping isn't a concern for you, and you like this style, it is certainly an option. All SmartTrack footbraces can be easily retrofitted for rudder control. We also sell this footbrace as a rudder control package.
Note: in a skin on frame kayak this footbrace must be paired with a Drop Kit.
